Biden: Israel putting US troops in danger

By announcing tens of thousands of new “settler units” in Jerusalem.

Amplifyd from www.huffingtonpost.com
It is about the effect that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s announcement of new West Bank settlements — during Vice President Biden’s visit — could do to the United States.
People who heard what Biden said were stunned. “This is starting to get dangerous for us,” Biden castigated his interlocutors. “What you’re doing here undermines the security of our troops who are fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. That endangers us and it endangers regional peace.”

Yesterday’s announcement of 1600 new settler units was the tip of the iceberg. Today Israel announced another 50,000 settler units in Jerusalem. What a way to treat Joe Biden, who has been so close to Israel for 30 years that he’s practically a kibbutznik.

Asia Times: New optimism for Israeli-Palestinian security

How long’s it been since you read an upbeat piece on Israel?  Article called “Obama drives the peace train” sees reason for optimism in changes in US respect for needs of both sides

the settlement freeze
the current drive does hold out realistic hope that, this time, things may
be more attuned not only to Israeli security needs, but also to Palestinian national needs:
This is
the first time ever that the US has managed to make peace talks
conditional on an Israeli policy shift
  • Because of Obama’s insistence, Netanyahu has already given way - albeit grudgingly - on the vision of a two-state solution as the only way to reach a just peace. Nor has US contempt for the iniquity of continued occupation been fuzzed, as it often was by past administrations.
  • Concern for Palestinian human security has been given equal status with consideration of Israel’s security.
  • The US is committed, as the Palestinians insist, that talks immediately tackle the core issues - borders, refugees and Jerusalem
Obama is the first US leader to embrace the Arab League peace initiative of 2002 so that getting Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace constitutes the foundation of a total regional peaceRead more at www.atimes.com

Israeli professor may be fired for opposing apartheid

Certainly would make “academic freedom” farcical in Israel. Prof. Gordon wrote in LA Times that he did not want his children or the children of his Palestinian neighbors growing up in an apartheid regime; for this, he may lose his job.  Is this the USSR?  Click thru to add your name to emails to Israeli Ministry of Education.

On Thursday, August 20 the LA Times published an op-ed in which Ben Gurion University Professor Neve Gordon wrote that the question that kept him up at night, both as a parent and as an Israeli citizen, was how to ensure that his two children as well as the children of his Palestinian neighbors do not grow up in an apartheid regime. He concluded that the only thing that the only workable solution would be “massive international pressure.” (1) Following the publication of the article there has been such a vehement and aggressive attack against Gordon in Israel (2), that we believe “massive international pressure” will be needed to keep him from being fired from his job.Read more at salsa.democracyinaction.org
