An investigation into abuse of terrorism detainees won’t be halted following a letter sent to President Barack Obama by seven former CIA directors. “I don’t want to start getting into the business of squelching, you know, investigations that are being conducted,” Obama told CNN’s John King Sunday.

“I appreciate the former CIA directors wanting to look after an institution that they helped to build,” Obama told CBS’ Bob Schieffer in a separate interview.

Obama administration to reopen at least a dozen CIA abuse cases

The Obama administration is on the verge of reopening at least a dozen CIA abuse cases, a move that will reignite the contentious debate over torture.

It now seems extremely likely that Eric H. Holder Jr., the Attorney General, will appoint a criminal prosecutor to investigate the alleged abuse. US media report that he became sympathetic to reopening the cases after reading the grim details in the classified 2004 report.

Most of the cases deal with allegations from prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Ethics Office at the Justice Department has suggested that as many as half of the cases originally referred to them by the CIA’s inspector general should be re-examined.
